TEXAS WOMENS UNIVERSITY: TWU choir to perform at music educators’ centennial convention

Womens

Texas Womens University issued the following announcement on Feb. 06.

The Texas Woman’s University Concert Choir has been selected to perform at the 2020 Texas Music Educators Association (TMEA) Centennial Clinic/Convention Feb. 13 in San Antonio. TWU is one of only two collegiate choral ensembles invited to perform out of more than 150 entries.

The conference will be held at the city’s downtown Henry B. Gonzalez Convention Center. The program, conducted by Joni Jensen, DMA, professor of voice and director of choral activities, will begin at 8 p.m. in the Hemisfair Ballroom.

This year also marks the centennial anniversary of the ratification of the 19th amendment, which granted women the right to vote in the United States. To commemorate the occasion, Jensen and assistant professor of music theory Paul Thomas, Ph.D., have composed original pieces for the convention program that feature women’s suffrage poetry by feminist activists Charlotte Perkins Gillman and Alice Duer Miller.

The TMEA conference is the largest of its kind and draws approximately 29,000 music educators, clinicians, exhibitors, students and their families each year. Performing ensembles are chosen through a blind review process.
