City of Cedar Hill commits to helping blood supply during local and national emergencies
The City joins Blood Emergency Readiness Corp for blood drives
The City of Cedar Hill has a history of sponsoring blood drives with Carter BloodCare. Now the City’s commitment to blood donation is going one step further – it has joined the Blood Emergency Readiness Corps (BERC) to ensure there is enough blood available if a mass casualty event occurs anywhere in the country. The City will be a BERC blood-drive sponsor.
BERC is a group of independent community blood centers around the U.S., including Carter BloodCare, who have committed to joining together to be prepared for disasters that may strike and require blood transfusions for many patients at once. BERC blood centers have committed to collecting extra units of blood on a rotating “on call” schedule, to create an available supply of blood for those emergency needs. If the extra blood collected is not needed during the ‘on call’ week, the blood returns to the local supply. The emergency program was created because the blood inventory nationwide has been chronically low since the pandemic began.
Blood drive sponsors with a consistent history of strong donation rates are invited to participate. BERC blood-drive sponsors like the City of Cedar Hill, commit to host three blood drives a year to bring in large numbers of blood donors. The first one was Jan. 14, 2022. The next blood drive is May 13 from 9:30 am to 4:30 pm at the Alan E. Sims Recreation Center. (310 E. Parkerville Rd.) The Carter BloodCare bus will be in the front parking lot for donors.
